Tooth Decay
Even with Fluoridation and Oral hygiene, tooth decay is the most common disease affecting 11million Australians each year, touching every family. Authorities need to all get their act together and look at the evidence starting with chewing surfaces that are most susceptible to acid demineralisation that exceeds saliva and fluoride remineralisation.
Recent heath reform reports like “A Healthier Future For All Australians”, all recommend improved evidence based oral health promotion and the best place to start is occlusal pit and fissures where over 80% of cavities occur from acid forming carbohydrate that demineralises tooth where food is trapped under chewing pressure and brushing cannot reach while saliva has no access to neutralise acid or remineralise tooth
Fissure sealants placed over chewing surfaces, blocks food being trapped and halts the caries process.
Sealants placed under chewing pressure penetrate deeper inside pits and fissures as seen in the first of the photos of sealant after both teeth were dissolved in acid.
This is where food is trapped under chewing pressure and where fluoride toothpaste can be forced under chewing pressure as seen with the simple, very low cost glass model of a fissure.
